Kuwaiti Prime Minister meeting with Pope is another milestone in relations

His Highness the Prime Minister of Kuwait Sheikh Jaber Al-Mubarak Al- Hamad Al-Sabah’s meeting with Pope Francis was “another milestone in Kuwait-Vatican relations”, said a statement by the Kuwaiti Embassy in the Vatican Friday.

The statement came after the conclusion of His Highness Sheikh Jaber Al-Mubarak’s visit which saw him also meeting with the Vatican’s Cardinal Secretary of State Archbishop Pietro Parolin. The statement indicated that His Highness the Prime Minister expressed his gratitude towards the Vatican’s role in building bridges amongst nations.

It went on saying that Sheikh Jaber Al-Mubarak handed a written letter from His Highness the Amir of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah to Pope Francis. His Highness the Amir’s letter included greetings from the Kuwaiti leader and an invitation for the Pope to visit Kuwait. Pope Francis, on his part, commended His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al- Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah for his efforts within the humanitarian field which led to the UN honoring in New York last year. The UN named His Highness the Amir as a “Humanitarian Leader” and Kuwait as a “Humanitarian Center”. The statement touched on the meetings between the Kuwaiti and Vatican parities during His Highness Sheikh Jaber Al-Mubarak’s visit.

The meetings touched on the regional situation in the Middle East and efforts to help refugees, namely Syrians, to overcome their plight. The meetings resulted in the signing of several memoranda of understanding on the foreign relations level. Kuwait was the first GCC nation to establish diplomatic ties with the Vatican in 1969. His Highness the Prime Minister of Kuwait Sheikh Jaber Al-Mubarak Al- Hamad Al-Sabah met in the Italian capital Rome on Friday with the President of the friendly Republic of Italy Sergio Mattarella in the Quirinal Palace.

His Highness the Premier handed over to Mattarella during the meeting a letter from His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al- Sabah tackling the distinct bilateral relations and ways of strengthening the frameworks of mutual cooperation between the two friendly countries in various fields. The letter also included an official invitation from His Highness the Amir to Mattarella to visit Kuwait to discuss various issues of mutual interest. His Highness the Premier also conveyed to the President the greetings of His Highness the Amir and His Highness the Crown Prince and their best wishes for Italy and its people for more prosperity and progress.

During the meeting, both sides reviewed bilateral relations between the two friendly countries and ways bolstering them in order to serve the interests of both countries and peoples, in addition to international and regional issues of common interest and the position of the two countries towards them. The meeting was attended by First Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Sabah Al-Khalid Al- Hamad Al-Sabah, Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Sheikh Khalid Al-Jarrah Al-Sabah, Deputy Foreign Minister Ambassador Khalid Sulaiman Al-Jarallah and members of the Kuwaiti delegation and the Kuwaiti Ambassador to Italy Sheikh Ali Al- Khalid Al-Sabah. His Highness the Prime Minister Sheikh Jaber Al-Mubarak Al-Hamad Al-Sabah held talks with Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi Friday in the Italian capital Rome.

The candid talks reflected the fiftyyear- long relations between Kuwait and Italy. His Highness the Premier Sheikh Jaber and Italian Premier Renzi discussed the furtherance of developing bilateral relations and cooperation in the political, economic, military, cultural and scientific fields as well as people- to-people relations. The meeting was attended by First Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled Al- Hamad Al-Sabah,

Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Sheikh Khaled Al-Jarrah Al-Sabah, Deputy Foreign Minister Ambassador Khaled Suleiman Al-Jarallah and members of the Kuwaiti delegation and the Kuwaiti Ambassador to Italy Sheikh Ali Al- Khalid Al-Sabah. Afterwards, the Italian Prime Minister held a luncheon banquet in honor of His Highness Sheikh Jaber and the delegation accompanying him. His Highness the Prime Minister Sheikh Jaber Al-Mubarak Al-Jaber Al- Sabah met with Kuwaiti Ambassador Sheikh Ali Al-Khaled Al-Sabah, on Friday, at the Kuwaiti Embassy in Rome.

At the meeting, His Highness the Premier encouraged the embassy staff to exert efforts at all levels to secure international prosperity for the country. His Highness the Premier was accompanied by First Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah and his deputy Ambassador Khaled Suleiman Al-Jarrallah.

Mayor of Rome Ignazio Marino on Thursday underscored the significance of His Highness the Prime Minister of Kuwait Sheikh Jaber Al-Mubarak Al- Hamad Al-Sabah’s visit to Rome in promoting ties between the West and the Arab and Islamic worlds.

Marino made the statement to KUNA on the occasion of His Highness Sheikh Jaber Al-Mubarak’s visit to an exhibition entitled, “Art of Islamic Civilization”, organized by Kuwait’s Dar Al-Athar Al-Islamiyah (DAI) in Scuderie del Quirinale museum in the Italian capital. The mayor of Rome hailed His Highness Sheikh Jaber Al- Mubarak’s visit as serving to bolster long-standing bilateral ties. Marino also lauded Kuwaiti efforts in encouraging inter-cultural harmony through art exhibitions.
