MoH, MoI must join efforts

Ministry of Health is responsible for conducting medical examinations on expatriate personnel in their countries of origin and in Kuwait before they are issued with a ‘FIT’ health certificate in order to obtain residence in the country, reports Al-Rai daily quoting reliable sources.

They explained that the ministry does not want to shoulder the responsibility of granting residence to expatriate workers or deporting them from the country. The sources said the statement issued by the Undersecretary of Ministry of Health Dr Khalid Al-Sahlawi regarding 2,000 laborers who were infected with AIDS and had entered the country indicates the keenness and transparency of the ministry in dealing with the issue.

However, they stressed that the challenge cannot be confronted without proper collaboration among the concerned authorities especially with Ministry of Interior. They indicated that the medical examination center for expatriate workers in the country receives large number of domestic personnel on a daily basis. However, the results of some medical tests such as those of AIDS and tuberculosis are not available immediately.

They revealed that some sponsors of domestic workers are not willing to repatriate them immediately after knowing that they are infected with contagious diseases because of the money they spent to bring them into the country. They added that the workers are sometimes sent back to the domestic employment offices which do not hesitate giving the workers to another sponsor.

The sources affirmed that the Ministry of Health coordinates with the Ministry of Interior and provides the latter with necessary documents of the expatriate workers who are infected with contagious diseases; however, Ministry of Interior sometimes delays in repatriating them. They urged sponsors about the dangers of sheltering domestic workers who are infected with contagious or dangerous diseases.
