“Stretch Marks, Be Gone!”

Bollywood’s “Yummy Mummy” Shilpa Shetty reveals secret behind beautiful skin throughout her pregnancy

Soft and supple skin can be perceived as the essence of youth for many women and Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty personifies that notion with great ease. Through her career in the Bollywood industry for more than two decades, Shetty has aged to perfection even through her recent journey into motherhood. It’s no wonder that Shetty was awarded the “Yummy Mummy” award at a recent Bio-Oil event in Mumbai where 61% of new and expecting mothers in India voted for the actress as the yummiest mummy in Bollywood.

It was during the event that Shetty revealed her skin’s best friend during pregnancy. “Thank you Bio-Oil for taking care of my skin during the most crucial time of my life – My pregnancy! Like all women, I used to be worried about pregnancy stretch marks but using Bio-Oil took care of that problem to a great extent!" she said.

Shetty is not alone when it comes to worrying about the dreaded “stretch marks” during pregnancy. Stretch marks are one of the constant reminders to new mothers that “your body has changed and will never be the same”.

Here are a few quick tips for pregnant women and new mothers on how to maintain stretch-mark free skin through and after pregnancy, just like Shetty did.

1. Use Bio-Oil twice a day, generously.
Stretch marks can appear on any part of your body - on your abdomen, thighs, hips, lower back, buttocks and breasts. Massage Bio-Oil into your skin on all these areas until it is thoroughly absorbed by the skin. The massaging motion encourages blood circulation and Bio-Oil’s formulation works to maximise the skin’s elasticity, thereby reducing the possibility of pregnancy stretch marks forming and reducing the scarring and appearance of existing stretch marks.

Also, make sure you exfoliate at least twice a week with a soft brush for deep cleansing and stimulation of the skin cells. By doing this, you will be encouraging blood circulation and this will encourage Bio-Oil to effectively penetrate through to your skin as well to improve elasticity.

2. Eat a skin-nourishing diet
Incorporating foods that are especially beneficial for the glow and health of your skin throughout your pregnancy can also help minimize the appearance of stretch marks. Certain foods can help maximize your skin’s elasticity and prevent stretch marks from forming in the most pregnancy-prone areas.

Sticks to foods rich in antioxidants, which help nourish and protect skin and eat plenty of spinach, blueberries, strawberries, and other fresh fruits and vegetables. Foods containing vitamin E and A are also essential, which protects skin cell membranes and repair skin tissues, they include nuts, seeds, avocados broccoli, collard greens, carrots, sweet potatoes, mango, squash, and red bell peppers. Foods containing omega 3s also keep cell membranes healthy and make your skin glow like fish, fish oil, walnuts, eggs and oysters.

3. Always stay hydrated.
It is extremely important to drink at least eight glasses of water a day at all times to keep your skin cells plump, which makes your skin healthier and more likely to bounce back from the stress caused by stretching. To further boost your skin’s hydration levels, eat vegetables and fruits that contain lots of water such as watermelon, strawberries, honeydew, cucumbers, celery and bell pepper. Stay away from caffeinated drinks such as coffee and soda as it’s diuretic properties causes you urinate more often thus reducing the amount of water in your body.
