The Cuban Company “La Colmenita”, Ambassadors of Good Will of UNESCO, will arrive in Kuwait on Sunday,10 August and will perform at the Al Dasma theatre on Monday, 11 August at 8:00 pm.
Brief Story of La Colmenita
On February 14th, 1990 emerged a small theater group composed by youngsters and children, directed by Carlos Alberto “Tin” Cremata. In 1994, they premiered a version of the classic “Meñique”, played only by little girls and boys. This was the beginning of what has grown through the years; a Children Theatre Company of Cuba called La Colmenita. Based on the demand for integrating the company, since 1996, workshops of La Colmenita have been created in 14 municipalities in Havana and 10 provinces of the country.
In 1998, La Colmenita joined the Cuban Ministry of Culture as an official project of the National Council of the Scenic Arts, and in 2006, it was named Center of health promotion in Cuba by the Ministry of Public Health. In 2007, it was the first theater group to be declared the UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador.
La Colmenita has performed in more than 25 countries in Asia, Europe and America. This has made possible the creation of other Colmenitas in Spain (Sevilla and Tenerife), Mexico (Chiapas, San Luis Potosí), Panama, Dominic Republic, Colombia (San Cristóbal, Bogotá), Argentine (Buenos Aires) and 17 Colmenitas in 8 States of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.
La Colmenita has been involved in co-productions with Bread and Puppet Theater (US), Odin Theatre (Denmark), Deep Mountain (US), People’s Little Theater (Bangladesh), Les Mordus de Théatre (Belgium) and Corporación Cantoalegre etc. And in their casts have been: Silvio Rodríguez, Van Van Group, Omara Portuondo, Adalberto Álvarez y su Son, Vocal “Sampling”, The Papines, San Cristóbal Philarmonic Orchestra (Colombia), The Big Band Ribe from Denmark, etc. Likewise, it has produced three films of and for kids; the many times awarded:“¡Viva Cuba!”, “Habanastation” and “Y sin embargo…”
Among its most outstanding plays are “Mid-Summer Nights Dream", “Cinderella according to The Beatles”, “Andersen’s Cuban Tales”, “Alice in Wonderland”, “However, it moves…(“Y sin embargo…”), “Little Cockroach Martina” and “Abracadabra”, among many more. Since 2005, La Colmenita has its main building in the Theater of the Third Order from the San Francisco de Asis Convent belonging to the Historian of the City Office, in Old Havana.
